Parents often ask us at what age their children should start learning to ski. They find it hard to believe when they hear that turning three is the best time. In our many years of experience, this particular stage in a child’s development is the most optimal due to their capacity for concentration, willingness to cooperate with an instructor, and adequate physical fitness.
What should lessons for three-year-olds look like?
Lessons for 3-year-olds must be carefully prepared so that the child does not get discouraged from skiing. The most effective approach is combining instruction with a teacher and various games and activities. It is worth dividing lesson time in a 60 to 40 ratio: 60% fun activities in the snow, and 40% ski technique instruction.
Why? A 3-year-old child has a very limited attention span, is not yet accustomed to formal instruction and following directions from new people like older children are, and, above all, gets bored quickly.
A learning program designed for the youngest skiers
That is why it is worth choosing ski schools that feature specially tailored ski instruction programs for 3-year-olds. Otherwise, even private lessons can easily discourage a toddler from learning, and in the worst case, the child might remember skiing as something unpleasant for years to come.
At HSKI on Harenda in Zakopane, we welcome the youngest skiers to the Penguin Club, where learning to ski is combined with play. You can find out more about courses for children on the children’s ski kindergarten and ski school page.
