How to ride a platter lift safely?

The T-bar lift is a permanent fixture in many ski resorts. Although it seems straightforward to use, many people—especially beginners—struggle with it. Here is our advice on how to use a surface lift safely and smoothly, regardless of your skill level.

What is a T-bar lift?

It is one of the most popular types of ski lifts. It consists of a bar ending in a platter disc or a T-bar crossbar that pulls skiers and snowboarders uphill. The tow bar is suspended from a mechanically driven cable, and the skier holds the bar, resting the platter against their buttocks or between their legs. It may sound simple, but every phase of the ride requires focus and a bit of technique.

How do you board a T-bar lift?

Boarding is the critical moment that determines your entire ride to the top. Here is how to do it safely:

  1. Approach the bottom station calmly. Do not get in the way of others’ tracks and be ready to act promptly.
  2. Hold your poles in one hand, preferably the outside hand. You will use your other hand to grab the bar.
  3. Watch the lift attendants. At many resorts, the staff will help hand you the bar. Wait for their signal or reach for the approaching bar yourself.
  4. Do not sit down! The lift is designed to pull you, not support your weight. Rest the platter against your buttocks or place it between your legs without sitting down on it, as bearing down with your body weight often leads to a fall.

How do you dismount from a T-bar lift?

Dismounting requires composure and quick reactions, but it is not difficult if you follow a few basic rules:

  1. Prepare in advance. As you approach the top, look ahead to the designated unloading area.
  2. Release the bar smoothly. Do not jerk the bar—simply let go of it with your hand, and the platter will slide out on its own. The bar will retract automatically toward the cable.
  3. Ski off to the side immediately. Clear the exit area for the skiers behind you and be careful not to get snagged by recoiling bars.
  4. Focus on the descent. Behind the top station, there is often a short downward slope. It is easy to take a tumble here, so keep your balance.

How should you behave on a T-bar lift?

The key is staying calm and following a few simple guidelines. Do not sit on the tow, do not swing side to side, and do not jerk the platter, as this can disrupt the lift mechanism and endanger others. Maintain an upright posture with slightly bent knees, which makes it easier to absorb bumps along the lift track. Keep your skis parallel within the tracks and look ahead. Remember that lifts operate at varying speeds, so faster lifts require quicker boarding and dismounting.

What should you keep in mind when riding a T-bar lift with children?

Riding a surface lift with a child requires extra caution and preparation. If your little one is just starting out with learning to ski, riding together is often a good idea. Before boarding, explain to the child how to line up, how to hold the bar, and how to behave during the ascent. During the ride, keep an eye on your child to ensure they are holding the bar firmly and maintaining their balance. At the top station, help them release the bar calmly and ski clear to the side.

Put these tips into practice on your next visit to the slopes. Using lifts safely is the cornerstone of a successful day in the snow. And if you would like to practice under an instructor’s guidance, you are welcome to book private lessons at Harenda.
