If your child dreams of taking their first steps on skis, a ski kindergarten can be the perfect beginning to this adventure. We explain what it is, what a day on the slopes looks like, and why this method of learning is worth choosing.
What is a ski kindergarten?
A ski kindergarten is a learning program designed for the youngest skiers, usually aged 3 to 6. In it, children learn the basics of skiing in safe, welcoming conditions under the supervision of qualified instructors. The goal is not only technique, but also instilling a love for winter sports, building self-confidence, and learning safety rules.
The primary goals of a ski kindergarten:
- introducing children to the world of skiing through play,
- learning the basics, such as positioning skis into a “pizza” shape, or snowplough,
- developing motor coordination and balance,
- learning safety rules on the slopes.
What does a day in a ski kindergarten look like?
The day is packed with activity and fun in the fresh air. Children become comfortable with the equipment and winter conditions, and sessions are short and dynamic, tailored to toddlers’ attention spans.
Daily schedule at a ski kindergarten
- Warm-up and getting to know the equipment. Children learn how to put on their skis and perform simple balance exercises through games.
- First steps on the snow. Practiced on flat terrain and a gentle mini-slope, often equipped with a magic carpet lift designed for young children.
- Learning through play. Slaloms between cones, gliding down small knolls, and learning how to fall and get back up.
- Rest break and a meal.
- Further practice: braking, first turns, and skiing down a gentle slope.
- Wrap-up and awards, and occasionally mini-races that build self-confidence and motivation.
A ski kindergarten is a great way to introduce your child to the world of skiing while developing their coordination and self-confidence. When choosing a school, pay attention to the staff and reviews from other parents. Read also about what to know when choosing a ski kindergarten.
